Colby softball clinches spot in NESCAC Tournament
WATERVILLE, Maine --
The Colby College softball team clinched a spot in the upcoming New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Trinity College on Sunday.
The Mules (11-10) moved into a first place tie with Tufts in the NESCAC East with 6-2 records after taking 3-1 and 8-0 victories over Trinity.
Annette Caswell (Bucksport/Bucksport, Maine) drove in all three runs in the first game. She had a two-run double in the first inning to bring in Shannon Emerson (Gleneig/West Friendship, Md.) and Kate Hurd (Greely/Cumberland, Maine). Caswell added a sacrifice fly in the third inning to once again bring in Hurd.
Lauren Olmsted (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) improved to 6-3 this season by throwing a complete game for Colby. She also went 1-for-2 in the opener from the plate.
Lindsey Freeman (Kimball Union/Lancaster, Mass.) had two hits and the lone run for Trinity (6-21-1, 1-7).
The second game was called on the eight-run rule after five innings. Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) went 2-for-2, while Caswell scored two runs and also had two hits. Bonner, Caswell and Carrie Morin (Cony/Augusta, Maine) all doubled in the game for the Mules.
Toni-Lynn Robbins (Camden Hills/Appleton, Maine) allowed just two hits in five innings to earn the victory in game two.
Colby will play host to University of Maine-Orono at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
