Colby softball beats Middlebury in NESCAC tourney
WATERVILLE, Maine --
Colby College first-year pitcher Lauren Olmsted (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) threw a four-hit shutout and fielded her position well in helping the Mules take a 4-0 victory over Middlebury College in the opening game of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Softball Championships Saturday at Colby's Crafts Field.
Colby will play the Tufts/Williams winner at 4:30 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament. Middlebury will go against the Tufts/Williams loser at 2 p.m. in an elimination game.
Olmsted helped her own cause with seven assists and an RBI.
Kate Hurd (Greely/Cumberland, Maine), who also had seven assists at second base, had two hits and one run scored for the Mules (12-11). Shannon Emerson (Gleneig/West Friendship, Md.) had two runs and two hits, while Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) had two hits, an RBI and one run scored.
Annette Caswell (Bucksport/Bucksport, Maine) also had two hits for Colby and pushed her batting average to .446 this season.
The Mules scored an unearned run in the fourth inning and then added three more runs in the fifth.
Christina Freyer (Denver East/Denver, Colo.) had two hits of Middlebury's four hits. Sophomore pitcher Megan McCarthy (Bishop Moore/Winter Springs, Fla.) had nine strikeouts in a complete game.
