Jenny Lathrop wins another race for Colby

OTTAWA, Canada --

A new day, the same results for Colby College's Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.) and Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.).

The first-year alpine skiers once again took two of the top three spots in a slalom race at the St. Lawrence University Winter Carnival on Sunday. Jenny Lathrop won her second consecutive race, while twin sister Abbi Lathrop finished third for the second straight day.

Jenny Lathrop became the first Colby College woman to ever win a Division I ski race after winning the slalom on Saturday in her first collegiate race. She now is the first Colby skier --- female or male --- to win two Division I races. Lathrop and men's skier Rob Saunders (Rowland Hall-St. Marks/Park City, Utah) are the only two Colby skiers to ever win a Division I race. Saunders won his race in a competition last year.

Jenny Lathrop had a first run of 43.07 seconds and a second trip down the hill at 44.10 for a 1:27.17 total. University of Vermont's Jamie Kingsbury was second for the second day in a row with a 1:28.26. Abbi Lathrop finished with a two-run total time of 1:31.05 (45.42 and 45.63).

In the team scores for slalom racing Sunday, Colby finished in second place out of 11 teams behind Vermont but ahead of traditional powers Dartmouth and University of New Hampshire. Vermont had 88 points and Colby followed with 74.

For the Colby men Sunday, first-year skier Charlie Reed (Winter Sports School/Park City, Utah) had the best finish in 23rd place (1:38.33). Rob Saunders (Rowland Hall-St. Mark's/Park City, Utah) was among the top 10 after his first run, but did not finish his second run. Saunders had a sixth place finish Saturday.

In Nordic skiing Sunday, Colby's Hillary Easter (Jay, Maine) finished in 36th place in the 5K classic pursuit with a two-race total time of 42:31. Eric Fitz (Cumberland, Maine) was the top Colby male finisher in 40th place in the 10K classic pursuit (1:11:46).

In the combined team scores of all alpine and Nordic events, Colby finished in seventh place out of 11 teams.

The Colby teams will be back racing at the New Hampshire Carnival this Saturday and Sunday.
