Colby tennis teams split with Wesleyan
WATERVILLE, Maine --
Sara Hughes (Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) and Britt Palmedo (Deerfield/Ketchum, Idaho) each won tough singles matches and combined for a victory at first doubles to lead the Colby College women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over Wesleyan University on Sunday.
In the men's match, Wesleyan won the first three singles matches in taking a 5-4 win against Colby.
Hughes and Palmedo each lost their first sets and then battled back for the win. Hughes lost a tiebreaker in the first set and took a 6-3 victory in the second set. With time constraints, a tiebreaker was played to decide the third set and Hughes held on for an 11-9 win.
Palmedo had a similar match in losing 7-5 in the first set and then winning 6-2 to tie things up. She won the third set tiebreaker by a 10-6 advantage.
Paige Hanzlik (Hinsdale/Oak Brook, Ill.) also lost the first set before winning 6-3 and then taking a 10-7 tiebreaker to win at fifth singles for Colby (4-4 overall, 1-0 spring season). Christina Pluta (Mercer/Mercer island, Wash.) took the fourth singles match.
Rich Cook (Lincoln-Sudbury/Sudbury, Mass.) won at fourth singles and Ben Crane (Blake School/Edina, Minn.) took the sixth singles match for Colby.
