Women's indoor track wins USM meet; men second at Bowdoin
GORHAM, Maine --
The Colby College women's indoor track and field team started the season on a good note by winning the University of Southern Maine Meet on Saturday.
Karima Ummah (Litchfield, Maine) won the 55 hurdles (9.08), the high jump (1.57 meters) and the triple jump (10.89 meters) for Colby.
Jess Minty (Concord, Mass.) won the 1,500 meters (5:00.50) and Connie Beal (Cumberland, Maine) had an NCAA provisional qualifying throw in taking second in the shot put after winning the weight throw with a 14.03 meter toss.
The Colby women had 161 points to take the five-team meet. Southern Maine (125) and Bates (124) were the nearest competitors.
The Colby men participated in a meet at Bowdoin College and Xavier Garcia won three events for the Mules. He captured the 55 dash (6.73), the long jump (6.73 meters) and the triple jump (13.45 meters).
Lee Rankin won the weight throw (16.05 meters), Rich Downing won the mile in 4:24.73 and Reed Sibley took the 55 hurdles. The Colby men finished in second place out of four teams with 98.5 points.
