Ummah second in high jump at NCAA meet
GREENCASTLE, Ind. --
Colby College junior Karima Ummah (Litchfield, Maine) tied her own school record in the high jump, but Geneseo State freshman Kim Deprez had the biggest leap of the day in winning the competition at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at DePauw University.
Ummah earned All-America honors for finishing second place with her leap of 5-7 ¹, a jump that tied her school record. Deprez had a jump of 5-9 ¹ for the victory. While Deprez won by two inches, Ummah was a solid second and was ahead of the third place finisher by two inches.
For the Colby men, sophomore Xavier Garcia (Stoneham, Mass.) made the final of the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.74 in a preliminary heat. He will run in the final at 3:45 p.m. Saturday in the first of two heats. The four slowest times of the runners who qualified run in the first heat Saturday, with the top four runners in the prelims running in the final heat.
Connie Beal (Cumberland, Maine) did not make the final in the 20-pound weight throw. She had a throw of 49-5.5 to finish in sixth place in her flight, but was not among the top nine to advance to the finals.
Beal will participate in the shot put competition Saturday. Ummah will be in the triple jump and Elizabeth Frederick (North Attleboro, Mass.) will jump in the pole vault for the Colby women.
