Ummah, Garcia strong in the triple jump
LA VERNE, Calif. --
Colby College junior Karima Ummah (Litchfield, Maine) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships and set a school record by winning the triple jump at the University of La Verne Classic on Saturday.
Ummah had a leap of 39-0 1/2 to qualify for the NCAA meet at St. Lawrence University on May 22-24. She also earned seconds in the high jump (5-4) and the 100 hurdles (15.44).
For the Colby men, sophomore Xavier Garcia (Stoneham, Mass.) provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet and also broke a school record with a jump of 47-4 1/2 in winning the triple jump. Garcia also finished second in the 100-meter dash (11.06) and the 200-meter dash (22.43).
Elizabeth Frederick (North Attleboro, Mass.) provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet with her winning jump of 11-3 in the pole vault. She also placed third in the long jump.
Meredith Millen (Freedom, N.H.) was first in the 800 meters (2:23.69), Hillary Easter (Jay, Maine) took the 1,500 meters (5:03.57) and Karina Johnson (Tolland, Conn.) won the 5,000 meters (19:22.42).
Seconds for the Colby women went to Jess Minty (Concord, Mass.) in the 400 meters (1:01.86) and Becky Evans (Laconia, N.H.) in the 800 meters (2:24.66).
Peyton McElyea (Pacific Grove, Calif.) won in his home state with a time of 9:55.06 in the 3,000 steeplechase. Meanwhile, Jason Foster (Moretown, Vt.) captured the hammer throw in 149-2 1/2.
Reed Sibley (Plymouth, Mass.) took second in the 110 hurdles (16.61), Matt Riportella (Plainfield, Vt.) earned a second in the long jump (20-7 3/4) and Josh Hinojosa (Rio Hondon, Texas) was runner-up to Garcia in the triple jump (40-9 3/4).
