Lathrop sisters have big debut for Colby alpine team
OTTAWA, Canada --
First-year alpine ski racer Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.) became the first Colby College woman to ever win a Division I ski race after winning the women's slalom at the St. Lawrence University Winter Carnival on Saturday.
Lathrop joins men's skier Rob Saunders (Rowland Hall-St. Marks/Park City, Utah) as the only two Colby skiers to ever win a Division I race. Saunders won his race in a competition last year.
Lathrop had a 47.89 on her first run and a 50.28 for the second run for a 1:38.17 finish. Jamie Kingsbury of the University of Vermont was second in 1:39.71.
Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.), Jenny's twin sister, also had a big day by finishing in third place in the slalom in 1:40.70. The Lathrops helped Colby finish in third place in the slalom with 72 points behind Vermont (86) and Dartmouth (75).
On the men's side, Saunders finished in sixth place in the slalom with a 43.77 and a 45.63 for a two-run time of 1:29.40. Vermont's Jimmy Cochran won the race in 1:26.71. Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.) finished in 13th place in 1:30.31 and Noah Siebeck-Smith (Gould Academy/North Pomfret, Vt.) was 17th in 1:30.66. The Colby men were fourth in the slalom out of 10 schools.
For the Nordic women, Colby's Hillary Easter (Jay, Maine) took 32nd place in the 5K free technique race. Eric Fitz (Cumberland, Maine) was the top Colby male finisher in 44th place in the 10K free technique.
Racing continues on Sunday in alpine and Nordic competition.
