Saunders third in giant slalom for Mules
NORTH CONWAY, N.H. --
Colby College men's sophomore alpine skier Rob Saunders (Rowland Hall-St. Marks/Park City, Utah) finished in third place in the giant slalom at the University of New Hampshire Carnival on Saturday.
Saunders had a two-run total time of 2 minutes, 24.05 seconds. He had a 1:11.73 on his first run and then followed that with a 1:12.32. University of Vermont's James Cochran won in 2:22.20.
The Colby men finished in fourth place out of 10 teams in the giant slalom. Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.) was 19th in 2:28.82, Charlie Reed (Winter Sports School/Park City, Utah) took 23rd with two runs at 2:30.51, and Thomas Richardson (Team Gilboa/Edina, Minn.) was 26th in 2:32.37.
The Colby women had a tough day with no skiers finishing the two races. First-year skier Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.) was in fifth place after a 1:14.95 in her first run. However, she did not complete her second run. Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.), who won two slalom races in the St. Lawrence Carnival last weekend, did not complete either run.
The second day of competition Sunday will feature slalom racing.
