Jenny Lathrop stays perfect in slalom racing
NORTH CONWAY, N.H. --
Colby College first-year skier Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.) made it three slalom victories in three races this season after winning at the University of New Hampshire College Carnival on Sunday.
Lathrop had the two fastest runs of the day for a total time of 1 minute, 40.12 seconds to easily beat University of Vermont's Jamie Kingsbury, who had a 1:42.67 and has finished second to Lathrop in all three slalom races this season.
Lathrop had a 49.92 on her first run in opening up a big lead. Lathrop then followed up that run with a 50.20 the second time on the hill.
At the St. Lawrence meet last weekend, Lathrop won two slalom races to start her collegiate career. An extra slalom race replaced the giant slalom because of tough weather conditions last weekend.
Twin sister Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.) was the closest competitor to Jenny Lathrop after the first run. Abbi Lathrop had a time of 51.53 and was in second place, but had problems on her second run and settled for a total time of 1:57.27 in taking 37th place.
Nicole Wesson (Mount Washington Valley/Rockland, Mass.) finished in 30th place in 1:53.64, Caroline Riss (Gould Academy/Madison, N.H.) was 39th in 1:58.72 and Katie Lucas (Burke Mountain Academy/Mequon, Mich.) was 44th in 2:07.44.
The Colby women took sixth out of 11 teams in the slalom and the men placed fifth out of 11 squads. Rob Saunders (Rowland Hall-St. Marks/Park City, Utah) was 10th with a 1:32.70 two-run total (47.43 and 45.27).
Charlie Reed (Winter Sports School/Park City, Utah) was 14th in 1:33.38, including a solid 44.83 on his second run. Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.) placed 15th in 1:33.49 and Noah Siebeck-Smith (Gould Academy/North Pomfret, Vt.) was 19th in 1:34.04.
In Nordic skiing, the Colby women placed ninth out of 11 teams in the 15K Classic. Hillary Easter (Jay, Maine) took 40th place in 57:16.6 and Anna Carvill (Milford, N.H.) placed 42nd in 58:12.7.
In the men's 20K Classic, Eric Fitz (Cumberland, Maine) was 42nd in 1:02:56.6 and Kris Dobie (Walpole, N.H.) was right behind him in 43rd with a time of 1:03:33.4.
In the final team scores with a combination of all skiing events, Colby placed eighth with 281.5 points. Dartmouth won the meet with 639.
