Colby men's hockey ties U.S. Under-18 National Team

WATERVILLE, Maine --

The Colby College men's hockey team scored two goals in a 26-second span of the third period to forge a 5-5 tie with the United States Under-18 National Team in an exhibition game in the Bowdoin-Colby Classic at Alfond Arena on Sunday night.

Colby and the U.S. team each finished with 1-0-1 records in the tourney, but the Under-18 squad was declared the champions of the tourney based on fewer goals allowed. The Mules opened the tournament with a 7-3 win Saturday against Curry, while the U.S. team won 6-1 over Bowdoin in the other game Saturday.

With the U.S. team leading 5-3, Colby fought back with goals by senior Sean O'Grady (London Nationals/London, Ontario) and the tying goal by first-year forward Kevin Lyons (Walpole Stars/Canton, Mass.). O'Grady scored off assists from Nick Bayley (Cambridge Winterhawks/Cambridge, Ontario) and Patrick Walsh (Choate Rosemary Hall/Easton, Conn.) with 6:27 left in regulation. Lyons then tied the game 26 seconds later off an assist from Walsh.

Colby led 1-0 just 2:04 into the game off a goal by senior Jean Francois Auffrey (St. Paul's School/Dieppe, NB) off an assist from Joel Morash (Upper Canada/Liverpool, NS).

The U.S. team scored the next three goals before Walsh tallied off an assist from Bayley with 6:55 left in the first period. The U.S. team went up 4-2 with 2:56 left in the first period, but Auffrey scored again off assists from Cory Ernst (Upper Canada/Bridgewater, NS) and Morash with 19 seconds left in the opening period.

The Under-18 team got the only goal of the second period to take a 5-3 lead.

The U.S. team had a 40-35 advantage in shots and goalie Wylie Rogers was named the tournament MVP. Colby goalie J.D. Hadiaris (Philips Exeter/Saco, Maine) stopped 35 shots.

Colby (3-0) will play at rival Bowdoin on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Mules then end the first semester with road games at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and then against Skidmore College in a game Saturday at 3 p.m.
