Volleyball team has 2-1 NESCAC Weekend

HARTFORD, Conn. --

The Colby College volleyball team just missed out staying unbeaten in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Trinity College.

The Mules (15-6, 5-1 NESCAC) lost a tough 3-2 match to Trinity in the final competition of the day. The Bantams escaped with 33-31 and 30-27 wins in the first two games only to see Colby roll to 30-19 and 30-11 in games three and four. Trinity (7-11, 2-4) took a 17-15 victory in the deciding game.

"Our slow starts in the first two games really hurt us," Colby coach Candice Parent said. "I like the way we were able to rebound and come back in games three and four. This team never gives up."

Colby also took an easy 3-0 victory over Connecticut College in Saturday's other match. The Mules opened play on Friday night with a 3-2 win against Wesleyan.

Junior setter Kimberly Prescott (Los Alamitos/Buena Park, Calif.) had a school record 67 assists in the loss to Trinity. First-year outside hitter Cait Cleaver (Unionville/Kennett Square, Pa.) had 22 kills and 16 digs, junior Johanna Schroeder (Salmon/Salmon, Idaho) finished with 20 kills and eight digs, junior Abbey Stella (Westfield/Westfield, Mass.) had 16 kills and first-year player Jennifer Radcliffe (South Eugene/Eugene, Ore.) added 10 kills and 21 digs.

Prescott had 33 assists and 13 digs in a 30-22, 30-22, 30-24 win over Connecticut College. Stella had 11 kills, Schroeder added 10 kills and Cleaver had six kills in just one game.

Cleaver had 26 kills in the 28-30, 30-23, 31-29, 26-30, 15-13 win over Wesleyan. Prescott had 53 assists and Henley had 11 kills. Senior Laurel Burnham (Gilbraltar/Baileys Harbor, Wis.) played the libero position for the first time and had 18 digs.

Colby will host a NESCAC Weekend this Friday and Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium. The Mules will play Friday at 6 p.m. against Bowdoin and then versus Bates at 8 p.m. Colby meets Amherst at 11 a.m. Saturday and finishes the weekend against Tufts at 1 p.m.
