WATERVILLE, Maine --
Kate Stumpo (Walpole, Mass.) had 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists as fifth-seeded Williams College held on for a 59-56 victory over Colby College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinal game Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Williams (18-7) will move on to play top-seeded Bowdoin College next Saturday at Bowdoin in one semifinal. Colby, the fourth seed, ends the season at 18-7.
The Ephs led 56-45 with 3:54 left in the game, but Colby used full-court pressure defense to get back in the contest. Colby senior point guard Bianca Belcher (Lewiston, Maine) had her 3-point shot at the buzzer rim out.
Melissa Skeffington (Woburn, Mass.) added 15 points and Kerri McMahon (Denville, N.J.) had 11 points, four assists and five steals for Williams.
The Ephs' defense allowed Colby senior Sarah Walsh (Catonsville, Md.) to just six shots in the game. Walsh still finished with 12 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Williams, though, held Walsh without a shot for the first 15:45 of the second half with double and triple teaming.
Walsh ended her career with 1,409 points, 1,022 rebounds, 245 steals and 238 assists. She was Colby's all-time leading rebounder and steals leader. Walsh moved into second place on the career-scoring list past Erin Cole-Karagory '00 (1,403 points).
Belcher had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Wendy Bonner had 14 points for the Mules.
