Walsh breaks rebounding record in Colby loss
WATERVILLE, Maine --
Carla Flaherty (Gorham/Gorham, Maine) went over 1,000 career points and Oliva Zurek (Arlington/Arlington, Mass.) had 16 points and 16 rebounds to power the Bates College women's basketball team to a 73-59 New England Small College Athletic Conference victory over Colby College on Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Colby's Sarah Walsh (Seton Keough/Catonsville, Md.) also had a milestone in the game. She became the all-time leading rebounder for the Mules, passing Kaye Cross '84 (956 rebounds from 1980-84). Walsh finished the game with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She now has 959 career rebounds and 1,311 career points.
Flaherty finished with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Bobcats (13-5, 4-2 NESCAC). Flaherty, a senior, now has 1,008 career points after reaching a 1,000 points on a 3-point shot with 12:50 left in the game to give Bates a 48-38 lead.
Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Colby (15-5, 5-2). Bianca Belcher (Lewiston/Lewiston, Maine) added 14 points, and five assists.
Lauren Dubois led Bates with 21 points, including 4-for-7 from 3-point range.
The Mules will play host to Tufts University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
