Women's basketball easily beats Conn College
NEW LONDON, Conn. --
Sophomore forward Wendy Bonner (Lexington, MA) poured in a game-high 19 points, leading the Colby College women's basketball team to a 72-34 victory over host Connecticut College (2-11, 0-4) at Luce Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
Senior forward Sarah Walsh (Catonsville, MD) chipped in with 16 points and seven rebounds for the Mules. Walsh went over 900 career rebounds and now has 903 to go along with 1,241 points.
Sarah Kelly (Portsmouth/Portsmouth, N.H.) added 11 points, five assists and five steals for the Mules. Alicia Burrows (New Hampton/Meredith, N.H.) and Caitlin Bourque (North Middlesex/Townsend, Mass.) both had eight points (Bourque also had seven boards), while Alanna Balboni (Berwick Academy/Rye, N.H.) had six points and six rebounds.
Margaret Guernsey (Essex, CT) had 10 points and seven rebounds for the host Camels.
The Mules (11-4, 3-1) jumped on the Camels early, out-scoring the hosts 19-4 in the opening 6:30 of the contest. Walsh netted eight of her 16 points during this stretch, taking advantage of her size advantage in the low post. The Camels climbed to within 15 of the Mules with 1:57 to play in the first, trailing 31-16.
Colby had a 48-34 rebounding advantage over the Camels.
The Mules will play a non-conference game at home against St. Joseph's this Tuesday at 7 p.m.
