Southern Maine women fight back for win over Colby
WATERVILLE, Maine --
Tiffany Jones (Skowhegan/Skowhegan, Maine) hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1.1 seconds left as University of Southern Maine battled back from a halftime deficit for a 67-66 win against Colby College in women's basketball Tuesday at Alfond Arena.
After Colby's Drea DeAngelo (Sycamore/Cincinnati, Ohio) tied the game with a 3-point shot at 66-66, Southern Maine (9-2) held for the last shot. Jones, after the controversial foul call with 1.1 second left, made the first of two free throws.
Jones finished with 17 points, including 8-for-12 shooting from the foul line. Colby (6-2) was just 6-for-11 from the free throw line for the game.
DeAngelo had 11 of her 19 points in the first half as Colby led big early and settled for a 38-28 halftime lead. Sarah Walsh (Seton Keough/Catonsville, Md.) added 17 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Bianca Belcher (Lewiston/Lewiston, Maine) had 10 points and nine assists, while Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) finished with eight points and 14 rebounds. Christine O'Donnell (Salem/Salem, Mass.) had nine points and six rebounds for Colby.
The Mules shot 53 percent from the field in the first half, but just 36 percent in the second half. Colby also hurt its own cause with 24 turnovers compared to USM's 15.
The Mules play at Bates College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
