Walsh strong in Colby women's basketball win

WATERVILLE, Maine --

Senior center Sarah Walsh (Seton Keough/Catonsville, Md.) had 18 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals in just 22 minutes of action to help the Colby College women's basketball team open the season with an 81-39 victory over Roger Williams in the opening round of the Colby Tournament at Wadsworth Gymnasium on Friday.

The Mules (1-0) will play Plymouth State in the championship game Saturday at 3 p.m. Roger Williams and St. Joseph's play in the consolation game at 1 p.m. Plymouth State took a 73-66 win in the other game Friday.

Walsh was 9-for-14 from the field and had 12 points and 13 rebounds at halftime as Colby opened up a 44-19 lead at the break. Walsh needs just one steal in Saturday's game to become the all-time leader in career steals for the Colby women's basketball team.

Junior forward Caitlin Bourque (North Middlesex/Townsend, Mass.) and first-year forward/guard Kate Emery (Westford Academy/Westford, Mass.) both had 12 points and four rebounds for the Mules. Senior forward Christine O'Donnell (Salem/Salem, Mass.) had 10 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists. Senior guard Drea DeAngelo (Sycamore/Cincinnati, Ohio) had 10 points and sophomore forward Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) had eight points and six rebounds.

In the other game, Plymouth State had a big early lead and led 37-25 at halftime. However, St. Joseph's fought back in the second half and took the lead at one point.

Whitney Morin (North Country Union/Derby Line, Vt.) had 22 points and six assists for Plymouth State. Jenn Pelletier (Pinkerton/Derry, N.H.) had 10 points, six assists and six steals.

Abbie Rice (South Portland/South Portland, Maine) had 18 points and Laura Pelkey (Nokomis/Palmyra, Maine) had 15 points, including 12 in the second half to get the Monks back in the game.
