Walsh is MVP as Colby women win tourney

WATERVILLE, Maine --

Senior center Sarah Walsh (Seton Keough/Catonsville, Md.) went over 1,000 points for her career, set a career steals record and had 33 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Colby College women's basketball team to a 105-97 overtime victory over Plymouth State in the title game of the Colby Tournament on Saturday.

Walsh, the tournament MVP, had eight of Colby's 20 points in a wild five-minute overtime session. She became the 10th Colby woman in school history to reach 1,000 points for her career and now has 1,015. Walsh also had two steals and set the career steals record at Colby with 179, breaking a tie with 2000 graduate Jenn Freese.

The Mules set school records for points in a game and assists (30) in a game. Colby had scored 101 points against Bates in 1991-92 and had 28 assists in a game twice.

Colby (2-0) had all five starters put up big numbers. Senior point guard Bianca Belcher (Lewiston/Lewiston, Maine) had 30 points, eight rebounds and six assists to earn all-tournament team honors. Senior forward Christine O'Donnell (Salem/Salem, Mass.) had a double-double with 16 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) added 20 points, including a 6-for-6 effort from the foul line, and had six rebounds. Meanwhile, senior guard Drea DeAngelo (Sycamore/Cincinnati, Ohio) had six points and five assists.

Plymouth State (1-1) senior Whitney Morin (North Country Union/Derby Line, Vt.) made the all-tournament team with 30 points, nine assists and six steals. Courtney Albert (Alvirine/Hudson, N.H.) had 18 points and five rebounds, while Heather Adey (Nashua/Nashua, N.H.) had 16 points and eight boards.

Colby led 44-34 at halftime as Belcher had 15 points and Walsh added 13 points and nine rebounds.

The two teams combined for 60 assists in the game and each team was above 50 percent from the field. Colby and Plymouth also combined for 62 turnovers in the fast-paced game.

Colby won its sixth annual tournament for the first time since 1997.

In the consolation game, Roger Williams took a 71-68 overtime victory over St. Joseph's College behind 24 points from all-tournament team selection Kristin Gaynor (Sacred Heart/Halifax, Mass.). Abbie Rice (South Portland/South Portland, Maine), an all-tournament team pick, had 17 points for St. Joseph's (0-2).
