Colby women's tennis fifth at NESCAC tourney

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. --

Colby College's Sara Hughes (South Burlington, Vt.) made it to the semifinal round of first singles and first doubles in helping the Mules take fifth place out of 11 teams at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championships that finished Sunday.

Colby had its strongest finish in four years and had 10 points. Williams won the meet for the third straight year.

Hughes, who was not among the top four seeds, took a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over fourth-seeded Jennifer Lejb of Tufts in a quarterfinal match. Hughes then fell 7-5, 6-2 to top-seeded Kristin Raverta of Amherst in a semifinal match.

Hughes and doubles mate Britt Palmedo (Ketchum, Idaho) captured an 8-2 win over a team from Bates in the quarterfinals of first doubles. The Colby pair then lost 8-2 to top-seeded Tristan Hedrick and Rachel Holt of Amherst.

In third doubles play, senior captain Jenny Grace (Darien, Conn.) and Paige Hanzlik (Oak Brook, Ill.) made it to the semifinals after an 8-2 win over a team from Bowdoin. Grace and Hanzlik lost to a team from Amherst in the semifinals.

In singles action Friday, Hughes advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5 comeback win over Julie Mallory of Williams in the second round. Palmedo also went three sets in winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 over Emily Sedlis of Connecticut College.

Anna Erdheim (New York, N.Y.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 'D' flight with an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory against Hamilton's Meghan Rose, but then lost to second-seeded Erin Murphy of Amherst. Grace (Darien, Conn.) lost 6-2, 7-5 in her round of 16 match to Middlebury's Rebeccah Duvoisin.

Caren Harris (Fairview Village, Pa.) and Christina Pluta (Mercer Island, Wash.) each fell in their first matches in the singles 'B' flight and the two also fell in a second doubles quarterfinal.

Harris received a bye in the first round and then lost fourth-seeded Alexandra Maclennan of Williams. Pluta fell in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-1) to Middlebury's Nina Popel in the opening round. Hanzlik (Oak Brook, Ill.) took a 6-3, 6-3 first round win over Diana Wilkinson of Bates in the 'C' flight, but then lost to second-seeded Lisa Miller of Tufts in the second round. Ginny Raho (Providence, R.I.) lost to Bowdoin's Julia Shaver in the first round of the 'C' flight.
