Colby College sophomore Sara Hughes (Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) and senior Britt Palmedo (Deerfield/Ketchum, Idaho) just missed out on advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament at the University of Redlands on Saturday.

The doubles duo of Hughes and Palmedo lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to Jennifer Lejb and Katie Nordstrom of Trinity (Texas) University. Hughes and Palmedo were one of 16 doubles teams competing for the national title.

Hughes and Palmedo finished the season with a 16-7 record in doubles play. Hughes, the Co-NESCAC Player of the Year, went 32-15 in singles and doubles play this season. Palmedo ended a fine final year at Colby with a 22-14 overall record.

In singles play Saturday, Hughes lost 6-1, 6-1 to third-seeded Jolyn Taylor of Emory University. Taylor helped Emory to the NCAA team championship in women's tennis. Hughes was one of 32 players in the singles competition at the NCAA tourney.
