Bayley earns National Academic All-America honor for second time

WATERVILLE, Maine --

Colby College men's hockey player Nick Bayley (Jacob Hespeler Secondary School/Cambridge, Ontario) is once again among the top student-athletes in NCAA Division III athletics.

Bayley earned 2003-04 Verizon Academic All-America Men's At-Large College Division First Team honors for the second straight year Wednesday. He was one of two student-athletes on the 15-man first team who also earned the same honor last year.

The squad is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Men's At-Large sports are ice hockey, golf, rifle, volleyball, gymnastics, skiing, water polo, fencing, swimming, wrestling, lacrosse and tennis.

Bayley was the only ice hockey player and the lone New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) athlete on the first team. He was one of two ice hockey players and also one of two NESCAC student-athletes to make one of the three 15-man teams.

Bayley was the only sophomore last year to earn At-Large National Academic All-America First Team honors. Since first-year students are not eligible for the award, Bayley has the rare opportunity to be a three-time National Academic All-America selection heading into his senior year this fall. Bayley majors in biology and minors in chemistry at Colby.

Bayley had the highest grade-point average of any Colby student-athlete, sophomore standing or higher, after the spring semester. He has been a NESCAC Winter All-Academic Team selection the last two years. Bayley was honored with a Phi Beta Kappa Undergraduate Scholastic Achievement Award, given to two members of the Colby Class of 2005 for outstanding academic achievement.

Heading into his senior year, Bayley has 45 goals and 68 assists for 113 career points. He led the Mules in scoring in each of his first three seasons and earned NESCAC All-Conference honors the past two years. Bayley is the 14th Colby men's hockey player to score 100 points or more.

Bayley has helped head coach Jim Tortorella's team to a 47-20-8 record the last three years.
