Colby athletes on NESCAC All-Academic Team
WATERVILLE, Maine --
Four football players, two volleyball players, two soccer players, one field hockey player and one cross country runner made up the 10 Colby College student-athletes honored as 2003 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Fall All-Academic Team selections.
The 10 Colby athletes honored were: junior football player Wayne Harrington (Rockland/Rockland, Mass.), senior football player Jeremy Jamieson (Stoneham/Stoneham, Mass.), junior women's cross country runner Karina Johnson (Tolland/Tolland, Conn.), junior football player Steve Kasperski (Naperville North/Naperville, Ill.), sophomore women's soccer player Kara McCabe (Taft School/Watertown, Conn.), junior field hockey player Melissa Mullen (Pope John XXIII/Green Township, N.J.), junior men's soccer player Aaron Poplack (Kinkaid School/Houston, Texas), senior volleyball player Johanna Schroeder (Salmon/Salmon, Idaho), senior volleyball player Abbey Stella (Westfield/Westfield, Mass.), and junior football player Tom Wilson (Bellevue, Wash.).
Jamieson, Mullen, Schroeder and Stella also were on the NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team last year. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing, be a starter or key reserve on a varsity sport and have a grade point average of at least 3.35.
Harrington, a linebacker, finished second on the team in total tackles with 56 and had five tackles for loss. He also intercepted two passes and had two pass break-ups. Harrington has played linebacker and defensive back in his career with the Mules.
Jamieson was seventh on the team in tackles with 36, had one tackle for loss, two interceptions and four pass break-ups. A defensive back, Jamieson helped Colby finish in fourth place in the NESCAC in pass defense.
Johnson was consistently the top runner this year for women's cross-country with an 18th place finish at the NESCAC meet and a 36th place finish at the New England competition. Johnson also placed fourth at the Maine State meet.
Kasperski led the football team in tackles with 73 in just seven games. He was third in the NESCAC in tackles per game at 10.4. Kasperski, a middle linebacker, had a team-best 39 solo tackles. He also had six tackles for loss, one interception and two pass break-ups.
McCabe, a back, was fourth on the women's soccer team in scoring with three goals and three assists for nine points. She has four goals and three assists in her Colby career. McCabe was part of a defense that allowed just 18 goals in 14 games.
Mullen came up big offensively and defensively for the field hockey team. The junior defender was second on the team with six defensive saves and was part of a defense that allowed just 20 goals in 15 games. Mullen also contributed on the other end of the field with the first three goals of her career.
Poplack, a junior defender, started nine games this year and played nearly every defensive position. He was awarded the Sam Koch Award by his teammates for spirit and dedication to the men's soccer program.
Schroeder, a middle blocker for the volleyball team, was fourth in the NESCAC in hitting percentage (.337) and eighth in blocks (0.89 bpg.). She had 221 kills and just 59 errors in 481 kills attempts and paced the Mules with 82 blocks. Schroeder finished her career at Colby with 811 kills, 205 blocks and 596 defensive digs.
Stella, also a middle blocker for volleyball, had 192 kills, 37 service aces and was second to Schroeder in blocks with 70 during Colby's 23-9 season. Stella ended her career with 799 kills, 149 service aces and 249 blocks.
Wilson, a wide receiver on the football squad, tied for the team lead in total catches with 21 and was second in receiving yards (284) and was tied for second in average yards per catch (13.5). Wilson also returned 25 punts for a 7.3-yard average and had 11 kickoff returns for a 22.4-yard average.
