Trinity baseball defeats Colby in wild NESCAC game

WATERVILLE, Maine -

The Colby College baseball team gave nationally ranked Trinity College all it could handle before falling 15-13 in a wild New England Small College Athletic Conference game at Coombs Field on Friday.

Trinity (20-3, 8-2 NESCAC) is ranked 12th in the country and No. 1 in New England, while the Mules fell to 3-18 overall.

Colby, though, had the tying runs at second base and third base and the winning run at home plate in the ninth inning. Trinity's Greg Talpey (Westbrook, Conn.) came in the game and got the final two outs for his fourth save.

Jeff Natale (Hamden, Conn.) had two doubles among his three hits and scored three runs for the Bantams. Andrew Fries (Dublin, Ohio) also scored three runs, had two hits and two walks. Eric Shattenkirk (New Rochelle, N.Y.) added three hits and three RBI, while Aaron Goldstein (Edina, Minn.) homered.

Vincent Domestico (Ashland, Mass.) went 4-for-5 and scored three runs while teammate Tom Salemy (Odessa, Fla.) also had four hits and drove in three runs to lead Colby. Brian Liberty (Hollis, N.H.) had three hits and three runs, and Eric Roy (Lisbon Falls, Maine) had three hits.

The Mules had a 17-16 advantage in hits, but Trinity led 8-5 after three innings and never trailed in the game.

Colby and Trinity are right back at Coombs Field for two games Saturday at noon.
