Colby women's novice 8 wins ECAC title; varsity 8 is 13th

WORCESTER, Mass. --

The Colby College women's varsity 8 crew finished in 13th place and the women's novice 8 remained unbeaten on the season with a championship at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference National Invitational Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday.

The defending NCAA Division III champs settled for 13th place after taking fifth place in the second of three six-crew heats on Saturday.

Colby did not advance to the 12-crew semifinal round, but did win the third level final to take 13th in a time of 7:03.6 over 2,000 meters.

Smith College won the women's varsity 8 Grand Final race (places 1-6) to win the ECAC title, while Trinity College had the best finish among NESCAC schools and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA meet.

Colby's undefeated novice 8 boat won the championship with a time of 7:07.1 in the Grand Final. University of California-Santa Barbara was second in 7:11.5, Dayton College took third in 7:11.8 and Bates College took fourth in 7:12.1. The Mules won heat one of the novice 8 by about 14 seconds over the second place crew.

Colby's men's and women's second varsity 8 crews each took 10th place overall with fourth place finishes in the Petite Final (places 7-12). The Colby women were fourth in their heat and then took fourth in the Petite Final with a time of 7:35.3. Meanwhile, the men's second varsity 8 was fifth in their heat and then took fourth in the Petite Final.

The Colby women's varsity 4 crew took 16th place.
