Colby's Brown wins Maine State title
CUMBERLAND, Maine --
Nat Brown (Wellesley, Mass.) won the Maine State College Cross Country Championship for the Colby College men's team by more than 15 seconds to help the Mules take a strong second place finish at Twin Brook on Saturday.
Brown, a senior, had a time of 26 minutes, 50.1 seconds over the 8,000-meter course. Southern Maine's Greg Dolbec was 15 seconds behind Brown in second place in 27:05.8.
Eric Reinauer (North Granby, Conn.) took third place in 27:11.8 in the field of 102 finishers. Jeffrey Alden (Caribou, Maine) placed 12 with a 27:52.3, Fred Bailey (Andover, Maine) was 18th in 28:26.0 and Peyton McElyea (Pacific Grove, Calif.) took 21st place in 28:31.1.
Bates won the men's meet with four top 10 finishes and a low score of 39. Colby took second in the 11-team field with a 55 and Bowdoin was third with 62.
Jess Minty (Concord, Mass.) was a strong third for the Colby women in 19:12.5 over 5,000 meters. Karina Johnson (Tolland, Conn.) was fourth in 19:17.8, Mary Phelps (Piedmont, Calif.) was 10th with a 19:52.8, Hillary Easter (Jay, Maine) took 13th in 20:02.0 and Elizabeth Turnbull (Wenham, Mass.) was 19th in 20:31.6.
Bowdoin won the women's meet with a 34 and was followed by Bates (41) and Colby (49) in the seven-team field.
