No. 19 Colby field hockey holds off UMF
WATERVILLE, MAINE -
Junior All-American forward Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) scored two more goals in leading the 19th-ranked Colby College field hockey team to a 2-1 non-conference victory over University of Maine at Farmington on a wet day at Crafts Field on Tuesday.
The Mules improved to 6-0 overall a few hours after finding out that the team is now in the top 20 of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. Colby will play at sixth-ranked Middlebury College this Saturday at 11 a.m.
In a driving rain in the first half, Bonner got Colby the first goal off an assist from Kim Betz (Greenwich Academy/Greenwich, Conn.) with 5:05 left to halftime. The goal was the first UMF (3-1) has allowed this season.
Maine-Farmington battled back when Mary Sinclair (New Sharon, Maine) tallied with just 1:46 remaining to the half.
Bonner got the game-winning goal less than two minutes into the half and now has nine goals and three assists for 21 points this season. She leads the New England Small College Athletic Conference in scoring and goals.
Molly Rice (South Portland/South Portland, Maine) made four stops for Colby, while Ashleigh Biette (Freeport, Maine) kept UMF in the game with 17 saves.
