Field hockey opens with overtime win
PLYMOUTH, N.H. --
Adrienne LeClair (Masconomet/Boxford, Mass.) made her first collegiate goal a memorable one as the Colby College field hockey team opened the season with a big 2-1 overtime victory over Plymouth State on Saturday.
LeClair scored with 2:18 left in the overtime period off an assist from All-American forward Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.).
Colby (1-0) handed Plymouth State its only regular season loss of the season last year when the Panthers finished the season 17-2. Bonner had the lone goal in that game.
Colby went up 1-0 with 22:25 left in the second half when Bonner converted on a penalty stroke.
Bonner scored her 20th collegiate goal and now has 20 goals and six assists for 46 career points.
Plymouth State (0-1) battled back about five minutes later when Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) tallied
unassisted.
Colby goalie Molly Rice (South Portland/South Portland, Maine) stopped seven shots in her collegiate debut. Defender Kristin Putnam (Messalonskee/Sidney, Maine) broke a single-game school record with five defensive saves.
The Mules will play at Husson College this Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
