Amherst football defeats Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine --

Matt Monteith (Madison, Conn.) rushed 11 times for 132 yards and quarterback Marsh Moseley (New Orleans, La.) had a big day with 189 yards passing to lead the Amherst College football team to a 31-0 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Seaverns Field.

Moseley completed 16-of-22 passes and also threw for two touchdowns. Monteith had scoring runs of 15 and 63 yards in helping the Lord Jeffs (3-1) rush for 269 yards on the day.

Amherst drove 12 plays and 87 yards in going up 6-0 on a 1-yard plunge by Fletcher Ladd (Amherst, N.H.) with 1:38 left in the opening quarter.

Monteith swept around the left end and down the sideline on a 15-yard scoring run with 12:22 left to halftime for a 12-0 lead. The Lord Jeffs made it 18-0 at halftime when Jim Devine (Chantilly, Va.) caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Moseley with 8:46 left.

Monteith went around the left side and down the sideline again in the third quarter to put the game away with a 63-yard scoring run with 11:35 to go in the third quarter. Amherst closed out the scoring when Jay Wagstaff (Tewksbury, Mass.) caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Moseley in the fourth quarter.

Wagstaff finished with five catches for 55 yards and Devine caught four balls for 41 yards as the Lord Jeffs had a 424-123 margin in total offense.

Colby's Mike Civitello (Hamden, Conn.) had 11 tackles, three blocked kicks on extra point attempts, two tackles for loss and two pass deflections. Wayne Harrington (Rockland, Mass.) led the Mules in tackles with 12.
