Goss, Stepka lead Colby football past Hamilton
CLINTON, N.Y. --
Sophomore kicker John Goss (Shrewsbury, Mass.) booted four field goals and junior tailback Aaron Stepka (Farmington, Conn.) rushed for 210 yards to lead the Colby College football team to a 19-16 victory over Hamilton College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Steuben Field.
Colby is now 3-2 overall and has a 3-0 record on the road this season. Hamilton fell to 1-4.
Goss kicked his fourth field goal from 23 yards out with just 1:29 left in the game to give the Mules their winning margin. He also had field goals of 30, 40 and 25 yards. Goss broke the Colby school record for field goal distance earlier this season with a 49-yard kick in a win against Middlebury.
Stepka, the nation's leading rusher in NCAA Division III last year, broke loose for 210 yards on 27 carries for a 7.8-yard average.
The Continentals tied the game at 16-16 with 4:49 remaining on a 16-yard touchdown pass by Brandon Holtslag. However, the Mules went 50 yards on 10 plays to set up the 23-yard field goal by Goss. The big play on the drive was a 34-yard pass play from quarterback B.L. Lippert (Augusta, Maine) to tight end Rodney Ames (Cotuit, Mass.) to the Hamilton 15-yard line.
Colby's defense then came up big after the touchdown to seal the victory. Sophomore defensive back Josh Berman (Lyndon Center, Vt.) intercepted Holtslag on Hamilton's first play of the drive.
Lippert was 13-for-22 for 172 yards and one touchdown for the Mules. Wide receiver Stephen Markesich (Weymouth, Mass.) caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Lippert in the second quarter and had five catches for 71 yards.
Peter Sherman (Larchmont, N.Y.) led Colby's defense with five tackles, two sacks and two pass deflections. Wayne Harrington (Rockland, Mass.) had an interception for the Mules.
Colby plays host to Bates College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
