Colby football loses opener to Trinity

WATERVILLE, Maine --

Trinity College was the toughest defense in New England Small College Athletic Conference football in 2002 and the Bantams look tough again in 2003 after taking a 30-6 season-opening victory over Colby College at Seaverns Field on Saturday.

Trinity (1-0) held the Mules to just 154 yards of total offense and the defense came up with a touchdown on a fumble recovery.

Drew Finkeldey had 13 carries for 98 yards as the Bantams led 16-0 at halftime. Trinity got on the board with a 26-yard field goal from Patrick McBrien (Norton, Mass.) with 10:36 left in the opening quarter.

Joe Pugh (Woodbury, Conn.) caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Erik Paisley (Bethesda, Md.) with 11:17 left to halftime for a 10-0 lead. The Bantams made it 16-0 at halftime when quarterback Josh Pitcher (Ogunquit, Maine) hooked up with Bradley Soules (Simsbury, Conn.) on a 6-yard pass play with just 18 seconds left to halftime.

The Bantams closed out the game early in the fourth quarter when Michael Blair (Plymouth, N.H.) recovered a fumble and rambled 15 yards for a touchdown less than 20 seconds into the period. Brad Davis (Marlborough, N.H.) added a 5-yard scoring run for Trinity's last touchdown with 6:26 left.

Colby (0-1) got a 4-yard scoring run from first-year running back Nial DeMena (Scarborough, Maine) with 3:30 remaining for the last points of the game.

Paisley and Pitcher combined for 85 yards passing, while Soules caught three balls for 22 yards.

Trinity's defense held Colby's Aaron Stepka (Farmington, Conn.), the nation's leading rusher last year in Division III in yards per game, to just 62 yards on 21 carries.
