Colby, Grinnell win Colby Men's Invitational games
WATERVILLE, Maine --
The Grinnell (Iowa) College men's basketball team brought its unique and effective brand of basketball to Wadsworth Gymnasium on Friday and came away with a 147-103 victory over St. Joseph's College in the opening day of the Colby Men's Invitational on Friday.
In the late game Friday, Colby took a 90-72 victory over Thomas College.
No team championship will be awarded since the tournament games were pre-set. The Mules will meet Grinnell on Saturday at 7 p.m., while Thomas and St. Joseph's play at 3 p.m.
Michael Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) had 23 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for Colby (4-6) in the victory over Thomas (2-6). Andrew Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) added 18 points, Nate Dick (North Attleboro, Mass.) chipped in 17 points and Tom Nale (Waterville, Maine) had 11 points.
Adam Rich (Madison, Maine) paced Thomas with 20 points, while James Godley (Brookton, Maine) had 17 points.
In the first game, Grinnell's fast-paced style of play was too much for St. Joseph's. Grinnell took 122 shots, including 81 from 3-point range. Grinnell had a 82-60 advantage at halftime.
Steve Nordlund had 27 points and Steve Wood added 26 for Grinnell (6-0). Mike Stallings paced St. Joseph's with 33 points.
