McGowan's 39 points lead Colby to tourney title
WATERVILLE, Maine --
After hitting his first 14 shots, including nine 3-point shots, and scoring a collegiate-high 39 points, there was little mystery that Colby College junior guard Patrick McGowan (North Attleboro, Mass.) would be named tournament most valuable player after leading the Mules to a win in the title game of the Maine Event tournament on Saturday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Colby (3-2) won the championship with an 85-72 victory over Husson College in the title game. University of Southern Maine won the consolation game with a 64-58 win over St. Joseph's College.
McGowan scored 24 points in the first half on 9-for-9 field goal shooting and 6-for-6 from 3-point range and finished the night 14-for-16 from the field and 9-for-10 on his 3-pointers. He missed his final two shots of the game, the first coming with 7:36 remaining in the contest after nailing 14 in a row.
McGowan tied a Colby team record for made 3-point field goals in a game. Ken Allen also hit nine 3-pointers in a contest in 1998 for the Mules. McGowan just missed tying an NCAA Division III record for consecutive 3-point field goals made of 10 straight. His miss with 7:36 left came from 3-point range and would have tied the record had he made the basket.
While McGowan was easily the MVP of the tourney, Colby also got an all-tournament selection from Matt Forlizzi (Danvers, Mass.). Forlizzi, who had 19 points in a win over Southern Maine on Friday, added 14 points on Saturday. Nick Loukes (Glenburn, Maine) added 10 points and six rebounds, Michael Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) had nine points and Nate Dick (North Attleboro, Mass.) had seven points and eight rebounds.
Dwayne Ailey (Howell, N.J.) and Bill Beauregard (Ware, Mass.) made the all-tournament team for Husson (1-1). Ailey had 22 points against the Mules and Beauregard finished with 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds.
In the consolation game, Mike Francoeur (Somersworth, N.H.) had 16 points and Jason Levecque (Westbrook, Maine) had 15 for Southern Maine (2-3) in the win over St. Joseph's. Jesse McKinnell (Manomet, Mass.) made the all-tournament team after scoring 10 points and pulling down a team-best 12 boards.
Steve Monteiro (Ipswich, Mass.) made the all-tournament team for St. Joseph's (1-4) with 14 points and seven rebounds on Saturday.
