WATERVILLE, Maine --
Evans Cazeau (Medford, Mass.) hit a driving lay-up with nine seconds left to lift the Lasell College men's basketball team to a 59-57 victory over Colby College in non-conference play Tuesday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Colby led 53-49 with 3:13 left in the game, but the Lasers fought back and took a 57-56 lead when Stern Chamblain (Everett, Mass.) hit a pair of free throws with 51 seconds remaining. The Mules then tied the game at 57-57 when Michael Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) made one of two free throws with 25 seconds remaining.
After the basket by Cazeau, Colby turned the ball over and the Lasers (3-0) were able to run out the final few seconds.
Cazeau finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Demetrius DeJesus (Bronx, N.Y.) and Napoleon Sandeford (San Diego, Calif.) both had 12 points.
Patrick McGowan (North Attleboro, Mass.) had 14 points and five steals to pace Colby (3-2). Andrew Jenkins (Gorham, Maine), who is back from an injury, and Westbrooks both had 11 points and five rebounds. Westbrook also led the Mules with five assists.
Lasell shot just 24 percent in the opening half, but the Lasers went 15-for-25 in the second half for a 60 percent clip.
