Mistretta named to District I academic team

WATERVILLE, Maine --

Colby College women's crew member Laura Mistretta (New York, N.Y.) was named to the 2004 Academic District I College At-Large second team Wednesday.

Mistretta, who just graduated from Colby with a degree in government, was one of four New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) student-athletes to make the first and second team.

Mistretta, a co-captain of the 2004 women's crew, was in the varsity 8 boat that helped Colby win the national title at the 2003 NCAA Division III Rowing Championships. She recently earned Colby's Patty Valavanis Smith Trophy for a senior woman student-athlete who has demonstrated the qualities of academic and athletic excellence and personal leadership and sportsmanship that characterized Patty Valavanis's career at Colby. Mistretta also was named to the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team and is Colby's nominee for 2004 NCAA Woman of the Year.

The squad is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). District I is made up of Division III colleges in New York and New England. At-Large sports are bowling, golf, rifle, crew, gymnastics, skiing, water polo, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, field hockey, lacrosse and tennis.

Mistretta also earned Division II/III Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete honors along with Colby teammates Erica Bauer, Katherine Brown, Margaret Duggan and Eleanor Thermansen.
