Bowdoin men's lacrosse defeats Colby

The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team used a five-goal second quarter to pull away from rival Colby and take an 11-7 win on Tuesday in NESCAC action. Bowdoin improves to 9-4 overall (5-3 conference), while Colby drops to 8-5 (3-5).

The Mules did clinch a NESCAC Tournament playoff spot when Middlebury defeated Williams on Wednesday. Colby, which closes out the regular season at Wesleyan on Saturday, will be either the sixth or seventh seed in the tourney depending on Saturday's results.

Tied at one after the first period, Bowdoin scored three times in under 45 seconds at the beginning of the second frame. Phil Stern found the back of the net on back-to-back shots at 13:50 and 13:16. Just 10 seconds later, Kevin Mullins dished to Ford Barker for a goal to make it 4-1 Bowdoin. Matt Neidlinger scored at 2:56 to improve the lead to 5-1 before Colby's Josh Cleaver stopped the run with a tally at 2:28. Connor Fitzgerald closed out the half with another goal for Bowdoin, however, making it 6-2 at intermission. Bowdoin would improve their lead to as much as 10-4 before a late Colby run made it an 11-7 final.

Fitzgerald scored twice and assisted on three other scores for the Polar Bears, while Stern and Carl Klimt also collected a pair of goals.

Cleaver had a strong showing for the Mules, scoring four times and assisting on two other goals. Grant White (four saves) started and played most of the game in goal for Bowdoin before giving way to Charles Legg (three saves). Matt LaPaglia made 12 stops for Colby.
