The Bowdoin College men's soccer team won their seventh straight contest in a 2-1 victory over rival Colby on Saturday in Brunswick. The Polar Bears, ranked 12th in the nation, improve to 10-1-2 on the season, while the Mules drop to 6-5-2.
After a quiet first 20 minutes, the Polar Bears got a great early chance when Tom Bresnehan took a sliding shot in the box that sailed just high. Minutes later, Bresnehan was taken down in the box and Bowdoin was rewarded with a penalty kick. The kick, taken by Bobby Desilets, was blasted into the top left corner to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead at 24:14. Desilets had a chance to make it 2-0 just a few moments later but a free kick hit the post and a rebound by John Hollis just skipped past the goal.
After intermission, Colby evened the score off a throw-in as Brian Kelly tossed the ball to Daniel Kiernan, who tapped the ball to Chris MacFayden. MacFayden whistled a shot into the goal at 52:31, tying the game. But that would be short-lived as Bowdoin's Andrew Russo flicked a pass to Bresnehan on the left side of the box that the junior buried into the back of the net at 54:09 for the game-winner.
Travis Derr made two saves in tying the Bowdoin career mark for goaltender wins (32). Colby's Brian Davidson made six stops. The Polar Bears saw their shutout streak come to an end at just over 626 minutes as they have outscored opponents 22-2 in their last eight games.>
