Colby men's soccer earns win over UMF
WATERVILLE, Maine --
Sophomore forward Monty Hankin (Canandaigua Academy/Canandaigua, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season with 2:35 left to halftime and that proved to be the winning goal as the Colby College men's soccer team took a 2-0 victory over University of Maine at Farmington on Thursday.
Colby (5-3-1) has won 10 straight non-conference games dating back to the 2001 season.
Maine-Farmington (7-4-1) had the better of play early in the contest, but the Mules struck first on Hankin's header off a long throw-in by junior defender Brian Kelly (Milford/Milford, Mass.).
Colby junior captain Ryan Boccuzzi (E.O. Smith/Storrs, Conn.) added an insurance goal about 21 minutes into the second half on a blast from about 18 yards out to the upper left corner. He leads the Mules with eight goals and two assists for 18 points. Boccuzzi's goal was his 10th of his career and he now has 31 career points for Colby.
Junior goalkeeper Brian Davidson (Loomis Chaffee/Needham, Mass.) stopped seven shots for the shutout.
UMF midfielder Jeff Beck (Salt Lake City, Utah) had eight shots in the game.
Colby will play at home against Amherst College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
