Williamson named top rookie in NESCAC, Cox also honored
WATERVILLE, Maine --
The Colby College women's soccer team had 10 first-year players on the roster at the start of the season and the squad's major improvement this year was helped out by those young players.
First-year forward Laura Williamson (Kingswood Oxford/Manchester, Conn.) made the largest impact of any newcomer and was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year after finishing the regular season as the league's top scorer.
Williamson and classmate Libba Cox (Choate Rosemary Hall/Guilford, Conn.) were both named to the NESCAC Second Team for their play in 2003.
Williamson finished her first season with 14 goals and seven assists for 35 points. She broke Colby single-season records for points and goals in a season. Williamson led the NESCAC at the end of the regular season in points per game (2.50), goals per game (1.00) and she was tied for third in assists per contest (0.50).
Williamson had a point in 12 of the 14 games in which Colby scored a goal. She dominated at the end of the season with either a goal or an assist on 12 of the final 18 goals of the year by the Mules. Williamson already ranks in a tie for 10th place on Colby's women's soccer all-time scoring list.
Cox, a midfielder, was second on the Mules in scoring with seven goals and one assist for 15 points. She was ninth in the NESCAC in both points per game (1.15) and goals a game (0.54).
Cox and Williamson helped Colby go from a 5-9 record in 2002 to an 8-5-1 record this past season. The Mules were outscored 38-30 last year, but had a 41-18 scoring advantage in 2003.
