Ummah, Roy among seniors who earn awards
WATERVILLE, Maine --
Karima Ummah (Westbrook/Litchfield, Maine) and Eric Roy (Lisbon/Lisbon Falls, Maine) were each honored with the Ellsworth "Bill" Millett Award at the Colby College Senior Awards event on April 25. The event was put on by the Colby C Club and the Colby Department of Physical Education and Athletics.
Ummah, a track and field athlete for the women's team, and baseball player Roy were honored for contributing the most to athletics at Colby during their four years.
Ummah is a three-time All-American for the women's track and field team and will be one of the favorites this year in the triple jump and high jump at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the end of the month. She holds three indoor and three outdoor school records and has won numerous regional, conference and state honors in her four years at Colby.
Roy was a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) First Team selection in baseball last year when he hit .380 and did not make an error at catcher. Roy was tied for third on the team in batting this year at .327. He possessed a strong throwing arm at catcher and very few opponents challenged him on the base paths.
Volleyball player Abbey Stella (Westfield/Westfield, Mass.) won the Marjorie D. Bither Award, while men's hockey player Ross MacMillan (Upper Canada College/Charlottetown, PEI) and football player Jeremy Jamieson (Stoneham/Stoneham, Mass.) shared the Donald P. Lake Award. The awards are presented to those who have shown outstanding athletic ability, leadership and academic accomplishment.
Stella helped the volleyball team to an 83-49 record over the last four years, including a 46-19 record the past two years. Stella finished her career with 799 kills, 249 blocks and 149 service aces. She made the NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team the last two years.
MacMillan finished his hockey career with 31 goals and 48 assists for 79 career points in 95 games. He was second on the team in scoring this past season with 11 goals and 16 assists. MacMillan, who has one of the top grade point averages on the hockey team, is one of four founding members of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Colby.
Jamieson had the highest grade point average on the football team and earned Verizon Academic All-District I (New York and New England) honors. He was a NESCAC Fall All-Academic selection the last two years. Jamieson was a three-year starter at defensive back, with 2003 being a fine year with 36 tackles and two interceptions on Colby's 5-3 squad.
Carolyn Plant (Davis/Davis, Calif.) earned the Pamela Hoyt-Sanborn Award and Matt Forlizzi (St. John's Prep/Danvers, Mass.) was honored with the Norman White Award. Both awards are based on inspirational leadership and sportsmanship.
Plant, who fought difficult injury problems her sophomore year, leaves Colby with school records in the 200 individual medley, 200 backstroke, 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay. She had the highest grade point average of any Colby women's swimmer sophomore standing or higher. Plant, a Winter NESCAC All-Academic selection, is the only Colby swimmer (male or female) to have recorded an all-time top 20 time in all 18 individual events.
Forlizzi was a role player during his four-year career with the men's basketball team, but was respected enough to be named captain during his junior and senior seasons. A Maine Event all-tournament selection this past year, Forlizzi finished his career with 283 points in four years.
Laura Mistretta (Phillips Academy/New York, N.Y.) won the Patty Valavanis Smith Trophy for a senior woman student-athlete who has demonstrated the qualities of academic and athletic excellence and personal leadership and sportsmanship that characterized Patty Valavanis's career at Colby.
Mistretta was thought highly enough to be named co-captain of this year's women's crew after the Mules won the NCAA Division III title last year. Mistretta was in the varsity 8 boat which crossed the finish line first at the NCAA meet. She has one of the top grade point averages on the women's crew.
Ryan Glennon (Phillips Exeter Academy/Exeter, N.H.) was awarded the Warren J. Finegan Award for significant behind the scenes contributions to the success of Colby athletics. Besides being a top player for the men's lacrosse team, Glennon was a student assistant coach for three years with the Colby women's hockey team and worked with the goalkeepers the past two years for the women's soccer team. Glennon was Colby's best face-off man in lacrosse and finished the year with eight goals and six assists, despite missing the final two games with injury.
Boyd Sands '59 was honored with the Carl E. Nelson Sports Achievement Award for success in the athletic world. Sands is the executive director of the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association.
