J. Lathrop wins first collegiate giant slalom race
PROSPECT, Vt. --
Colby College sophomore women's alpine skier Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley School/North Conway, N.H.) earned her first-ever collegiate giant slalom victory at the Williams College Ski Carnival on Friday at Jiminy Peak.
Lathrop won five of the six slalom races during her first season on the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) carnival circuit last year. This was her first giant slalom win and her first victory of the 2004 ski season. Teammate and twin sister Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley School/North Conway, N.H.) earned giant slalom wins at the Colby and St. Lawrence ski carnivals earlier this year.
Jenny Lathrop had runs of 59.67 and 55.80 for a two-run total time of 1:55.47. University of Vermont's Jamie Kingsbury was second in 1:55.68 and Vermont's Hilary McCloy had a 1:55.82 for third place. McCloy led after the first run with a 59.31.
Abbi Lathrop had problems on her first run and took 19th with a time of 2:00.67. She did have the fourth-best second run with a 56.86. The Colby women took sixth place out of 10 teams in the slalom.
Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.) helped the Colby men take fifth in the giant slalom after placing sixth with a time of 1:54.08 (58.70, 55.38). Vermont's Matthew Knittle won the race in 1:52.58. Charlie Reed (Park City Winter Sports/Park City, Utah) placed 25th in 1:58.10 and Jacob Colognesi (Carrabassett Valley Academy/Charlton City, Mass.) was 27th with a 1:58.40.
In Nordic men's skiing, Colby's Kris Dobie (Fall Mt. Regional/Walpole, N.H.) took 30th place in the 10K free technique in 28:14.1. Colin Witherill (Cumberland, Maine) was 37th in 28:42.7 for Colby.
Alex Jospe (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) was the top finisher for the Colby women in the 10K free technique with a 33:47.3 for 37th place.
