Lathrop sisters finish 1-2 in slalom to lead Colby to victory
PROSPECT, Vt. --
The Colby College women's alpine team had a historic day at Jiminy Peak by winning the alpine program's first-ever Division I team race at the Williams College Ski Carnival on Saturday in Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) competition.
Sophomore Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley School/North Conway, N.H.), a day after earning her first collegiate giant slalom victory, swept the weekend women's events by capturing the slalom. Lathrop became the first Colby women's Division I skier to win races in the same weekend. Men's skier Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.) won both races at the University of Vermont Ski Carnival earlier this year.
Lathrop had runs of 49.65 and 55.48 for a total time of 1:45.13. Her nearest competitor turned out to be twin sister Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley School/North Conway, N.H.), who took second place with a 1:46.07. Jenny Lathrop had the only time below 50 seconds in the first run. The Lathrop sisters have combined for four victories this season, with Abbi winning two giant slalom races earlier in the year.
The Colby women's slalom team had 79 points to win by one-half point over Middlebury College (78.5) and by one point over Dartmouth College (78).
Siri Ashton (Burke Mt. Academy/Nellysford, Va.) took 25th in 1:56.18 and Caitlin Healey (Lunenburg/Fitchburg, Mass.) was 30th with a 1:58.56.
With Warner Nickerson not starting because of some nagging injuries, Colby's Charlie Reed (Park City Winter Sports/Park City, Utah) made the top 10 by taking 10th place in the men's slalom in 1:45.85 (52.85, 53.00). Jacob Colognesi (Carrabassett Valley Academy/Charlton City, Mass.) was 20th with a 1:49.85.
In Nordic skiing, Alex Jospe (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.), Mariah Whitney and Kate Durda (Hinesburg, Vt.) were 14th in 44:09.4 in the freestyle sprint relay. The Colby men's team of Colin Witherill (Cumberland, Maine), Kris Dobie (Fall Mt. Regional/Walpole, N.H.) and Jeff Alden (Caribou, Maine) also took 14th in 37:16.1. Colby placed sixth overall at the meet (alpine and Nordic scores combined) with 373 points.
