Colby women's skier J. Lathrop second, men's Reed eighth in slalom
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. --
Colby College sophomore women's alpine skier Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley School/North Conway, N.H.) earned second place in the women's slalom on Friday at the Middlebury College Ski Carnival, held at the Middlebury Snow Bowl. Lathrop, who had won the slalom in last week's Williams Carnival, has finished no worse than third place in every slalom race she has entered this year in Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) competition.
Lathrop had runs of 46.88 and47.54for a two-run total time of1:34.42. Twin sister Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley School/North Conway, N.H.) came in 10th with a total time of 1:36.91. Ashley Best (Okemo Mountain School/South Salem, N.Y.) in 1:40.26 and Nicole Wessen (Mount Washington Valley/Rockland, Mass.) in 1:40.64 took 23rd and 24th place, respectively. Dartmouth's Courtney Calise won the event in 1:33.39. The Colby women took fourth out of 15 teams in the slalom.
In the men's slalom, the Colby team took fourth out of 16 teams. Colby's Charlie Reed (Park City Winter Sports/Park City, Utah) took an impressive eighth place in 1:22.71. Robert Saunders (Rowland Hall-St. Marks/Park City, Utah) finished 15th in 1:24.54 and Rory Kelly (Holderness School/Charlottesville, Va.) was 23rd in 1:26.90. Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.) missed his second consecutive weekend of skiing due to nagging injuries.
In Nordic men's skiing, Colby's men took eighth place in the 10K free technique. Colin Witherill (Cumberland, Maine) had Colby's fastest time, finishing in 26:29.0 and earning 30th place. Chris Dobie (Walpole, N.H.) finished 33rd in 26:36.2 and Jeffrey Alden (Caribou, Maine) was 35th in 26.52.9.
Alex Jospe (Pittsford, N.Y.) was Colby's highest women's Nordic finisher in the 5K Free Technique in 15.19.6. She was 37th. Colby came in eighth in the event.
