Colby's Nickerson keeps winning; Lathrops in top three

STOWE, Vt. --

Another weekend, another victory for Colby College men's alpine skier Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.).

Nickerson, with poor weather canceling the second run, had an opening run of 1:00.93 to win the giant slalom at the University of Vermont Ski Carnival on Friday. After a long weather delay, Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) officials decided not to have a second run for the men.

In women's racing, University of Vermont's Jamie Kingsbury finally got the best of the Lathrop sisters in the giant slalom. After two straight weeks of finishing second in the giant slalom to Colby's Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.), Kingsbury had a two-run total of 2:10.87 to win the competition.

Nickerson won the giant slalom at the Colby College Ski Carnival two weeks ago and took the slalom at the St. Lawrence Ski Carnival last weekend. University of Vermont's Matthew Knittle placed second on Friday with a 1:01.09.

Robert Saunders (Rowland Hall-St. Mark's/Park City, Utah) was 16th for the Colby men in 1:03.79. Charlie Reed (Winter Sports School/Park City, Utah) took 21st place with a 1:04.44 and Rory Kelly (Holderness/Charlottesville, Va.) placed 30th in 1:05.19.

Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.), Abbi's twin sister, placed second in 2:10.91 for the Colby women. Jenny Lathrop had a 1:02.84 after the first run and was in front of Kingsbury's 1:02.99 opening run. Kingsbury had the best second run with a 1:07.88, while Jenny Lathrop had a 1:08.07. Abbi Lathrop had runs of 1:04.24 and 1:08.25 for a 2:12.49 total time in taking third place.

Nicole Wessen (Notre Dame Academy/Rockland, Mass.) was 22nd in 2:21.58 and Siri Ashton (Burke Mt. Academy/Nellysford, Mass.) was 25th with a total time of 2:24.53.

The Colby women's giant slalom team finished in a tie for second place with 87 points, while the men's team took fourth. Both Colby Nordic ski teams placed ninth and the Mules overall (Nordic and alpine combined) were sixth after the first day of racing.

Eric Fitz (Greely/Cumberland, Maine) was the top Colby Nordic finisher in the men's competition after placing 24th in 36:52.8 in the 10K classic. Jeff Alden (Caribou, Maine) was right behind Fitz in 25th place in 36:53.1 and Fred Bailey (Telster Regional/Bethel, Maine) placed 35th with a 38:11.7.

In women's 5K classic racing, Colby's Hillary Easter (Jay/Jay, Maine) placed 32nd with a time of 20:59.4.
