Colby skier Nickerson sweeps men's races with slalom victory
STOWE, Vt. --
Colby College men's alpine skier Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.) made it a clean sweep of the men's races after winning the slalom at the University of Vermont Ski Carnival on Saturday in Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) competition.
Nickerson, a winner in the giant slalom on Friday, earned his fourth victory of the season in three ski carnivals. Nickerson won the giant slalom at the Colby meet two weeks ago and then won the slalom last weekend at the St. Lawrence meet.
Nickerson had a two-run total time of 1:30.79 to beat second place finisher Erik Kankainen of Dartmouth. Nickerson easily had the best time in the first run with a 43.69 and then had a solid 47.10 in the second run.
Charlie Reed (Winter Sports School/Park City, Utah) placed 11th in 1:33.38 (45.65 and 47.73) and Robert Saunders (Rowland Hall-St. Mark's/Park City, Utah) took 18th in 1:35.65. Colby, which finished third in the men's slalom, also had a 24th from Rory Kelly (Holderness/Charlottesville, Va.) in 1:39.31, a 25th from Jacob Colognesi (Carrabassett Valley/Charlton City, Mass.) in 1:39.40 and a 29th from Kristian Knights (Gould Academy/Lyme, N.H.) in 1:44.36.
In women's slalom racing, Colby's Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.) took third place in 1:38.63 (46.16 and 52.47). University of New Hampshire's Sydney Mikkelson won the competition in 1:38.31 after a strong 45.18 in her opening run.
Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.) placed seventh with a 1:40.86. Caitlin Healy (Lunenburg/Fitchburg, Mass.) was 18th with a 1:49.57 and Ashley Best (John Jay/South Salem, N.Y.) took 23rd in 1:50.98 in helping Colby place fourth in the women's slalom.
Both Colby Nordic ski teams placed eighth in relay competition. Kris Dobie (Fall Mt. Regional/Walpole, N.H.), Jeff Alden (Caribou, Maine) and Eric Fitz (Greely/Cumberland, Maine) joined forces in the 3x5 freestyle relay to place 12th in 46:36.1 for the Colby men.
Alex Jospe (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.), Hillary Easter (Jay/Jay, Maine) and Mariah Whitney placed 15th for the Colby women in 1:00:30.6.
