Lathrops earn All-America status in giant slalom at NCAA meet

TRUCKEE, Calif. --

Colby College sophomore twin sisters Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley School/North Conway, N.H.) and Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley School/North Conway, N.H.) both earned second team All-America honors for the second year in a row with top 10 finishes in the women's giant slalom at the NCAA Division I Ski Championships at the Sugar Bowl Ski Area on Wednesday.

On the men's side, Colby's Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.) placed 10th in the giant slalom and also earned second team All-America status.

Jenny Lathrop tied for seventh place with a two-run total time of 2:00.22 (59.58, 1:00.64), while Abbi Lathrop was 10th in 2:00.64 (59.82, 1:00.82). Jenny Lathrop was in a tie for fourth place with eventual champion Jennifer Delich of the University of New Mexico with the 59.58 opening run. Delich, though, had the best second run at 59.60. Places six to 10 earn second team All-America honors.

In last year's NCAA meet, Abbi Lathrop placed eighth in the giant slalom and Jenny Lathrop was 10th.

Nickerson was 12th after the first run with a 57.05, but went up two places with a 56.25 second run for a total time of 1:53.30. Nickerson, who has been battling injury problems the past few weeks, finished 13th at last year's giant slalom in the NCAA meet.

Robert Saunders (Rowland Hall-St. Marks/Park City, Utah) placed 28th in 1:57.11 (58.36, 58.75) and Charlie Reed (Winter Sports School/Park City, Utah) was 32nd in 1:59.27 (1:00.08, 59.19) for the Mules.

University of Utah's Ben Thornhill won the men's competition with a 1:52.24 (56.49, 55.75). Western skiers claimed the top eight spots, with Dartmouth's Roger Brown finishing in ninth just ahead of Nickerson.

The Lathrop sisters will compete in the slalom Friday at 1:30 p.m. (EST). Jenny Lathrop was the national runner-up in the race a year ago and Abbi Lathrop took a strong fifth. The men's slalom will start the day off at 12:30 p.m. (EST).
