Miller second in Division III in 100 butterfly
ST. PETERS, Mo. --
Colby College junior Laura Miller (Manchester, N.H.) took second place in the 100-yard butterfly at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday night at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.
Miller earned All-America honors for the second straight year in the 100 fly. She finished sixth last year and was leading this year after 50 yards. Miller had a 26.45 split time and narrowly beat Denison's Jill Boo to the wall. Boo, however, was faster in the final 50 yards for a winning time of 56.58 to Miller's 56.99.
Miller, the top seed coming into the event, started the day out right by having the fastest preliminary race time at 56.95 during the afternoon session. She easily had the fastest split time in the prelims with a 26.55 in the opening 50 yards.
Miller also earned All-America status along with teammates Beth Foxwell (Indianapolis, Ind.), Annie Muir (Springfield, Va.) and Meg Vallaly (Lake Forest, Ill.) for placing eighth in the championship final of the 400-yard medley relay on Thursday night. The women had a time of 3:57.55 in the final after breaking their own school record with a 3:57.44 in a prelim.
Miller, Muir and Vallaly all missed out on making consolation finals in other individual races Friday. Vallaly took 20th place in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.58, while Muir was 24th in 1:08.31 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Miller warmed up for her 100 butterfly final by placing 26th in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.03.
Also on Thursday night, Colby's Miller, Foxwell, Muir and Vallaly placed 15th in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 1:39.92.
