Hughes falls in NCAA tennis second round

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --

Colby College's Sara Hughes (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) earned a victory in her opening round match, but then fell in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament on Saturday.

Hughes, a junior, started the day with an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sewanee's Lauren Willett in the first round. In her second round match, Hughes lost a tough 7-5 opening set to Amherst College's Tristan Hedrick and then lost 6-1 in the second set.

Hughes finished the season at 11-3 in singles play and 18-6 overall (doubles record included) this year and is now 50-19 over the last two seasons.

Hughes finished last year ranked 23rd in Division III in singles play.
