Colby volleyball beats Southern Maine in three
GORHAM, Maine --
Colby College overcame a slow start to post a straight-set triumph over the host University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-league action on Wednesday evening at the Hill Gym.
The White Mules, who improved to 20-8 on the season, will travel to Amherst College on Saturday, while Southern Maine, which concluded the regular-season with an 18-11 slate, will host Keene State College in the opening round of the Little East Conference Tournament on Wednesday, November 5. Despite the final outcome, it was the Huskies who bolted to the early lead in the opening frame. Southern Maine grabbed a 7-2 advantage, before Colby answered with a 6-2 run to knot the affair at 8-8. Neither team could gain an advantage over the ensuing 10 points, and the score remained tied at 13-13. However, Colby closed out the set with a 17-8 run to post a 30-21 triumph. The White Mules added wins of 30-10 in the second set, and 30-20 in the third and decisive set.
Colby was led by sophomore Cait Cleaver (Kennett Square, Pa.), who recorded a match-highs of 15 kills and 12 digs, while senior Alyssa Henley (Spokane, Wash.) added eight kills, seven digs and six blocks, and Kim Prescott (Buena Park, Calif.) registered 35 assists, 10 digs and a pair of aces. With the two aces Prescott eclipsed the 300-milestone for her career.
