Southern Maine uses late shot to beat Mules
GORHAM, Maine --
Caleb Sayward hit a lay-up with 14 seconds remaining and that proved to be the difference as University of Southern Maine fought back for a 66-65 victory over Colby College in non-conference men's basketball Tuesday night.
The Mules (4-8) led 63-60 after a short jumper by Patrick McGowan (North Attleboro, Mass.) with 2:15 remaining. The Huskies took advantage of a couple Colby turnovers and outscored the Mules 6-2 in the closing two minutes.
Colby did take a 65-64 lead when McGowan scored off a nice pass from Andrew Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) with 24 seconds to play. After Sayward's shot 10 seconds later, Colby missed a jumper with a few seconds to play.
Jenkins, playing in his hometown of Gorham, had a game-high 20 points on 8-for-13 field goal shooting and a 4-for-4 effort from the foul line. Nick Loukes (Glenburn, Maine) added 11 points and four assists, McGowan had 10 points, Nate Dick (North Attleboro, Mass.) had nine points and six rebounds, and Michael Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) had eight points and six rebounds.
Mike Francoeur (Somersworth, N.H.) paced USM (4-7) with 16 points.
The Mules play at Bates College this Saturday at 4 p.m.
