Freshman forward Jennifer Carboni (Cheshire, Conn.) netted her first career hat trick to lift the host University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-3 triumph over the Colby College White Mules on Tuesday evening at the USM Ice Arena.

After Colby took a 1-0 lead through one period of play on junior Sasha Schroeder's (El Prado, N.M.) second goal of the season, Southern Maine responded with four unanswered goals in the second period. Freshman Kerry Leonard (Stamford, Conn.) scored her team-leading 15th goal of the game at 10:38 of the middle frame, before Carboni gave the Huskies the lead for good at 12:42.

The Huskies closed out the period with two goals in a span of 36 seconds to grab a commanding 4-1 lead. Carboni netted her second goal of the game at 16:09, before junior Jessica Judge (Porter, Maine) added the eventual game winner at 16:45.

Carboni completed the hat trick just 37 seconds into the third period, before Colby answered with a pair of goals to account for the 5-3 final. Junior Heather DeVito (Arlington, Mass.) scored a pretty power-play goal, deflecting a shot over Southern Maine senior goalie Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) at 5:11. Colby closed out the scoring with 11 seconds to play, when senior Kate Sweeney (Milton, Mass.) deflected a shot into the far corner.

Jamnik finished the contest with 23 saves, while junior Lynn Hasday (Rockville, Centre, N.Y.) and freshman Alex Harris (Windsor, Conn.) combined for 13 saves.
